I guess we can't really fix it, (or even just make it a little better) if we don't talk about it in the first place right? So let's talk about it!

The truth is I have had several businesses of my own, and helped launch countless others.

There is one thing that remained true for all of them, I am not ashamed to admit this…..every once in a while there would be a meltdown.

I'm talking Kleenex box in one hand and the empty container of Krispy Kremes in the other, kinda meltdown.

Ok maybe we substitute doughnuts for Tequila… your choice. Never the less it happens.

It happens, and SO WHAT if it does! Does it make you less of a person, hardly! Does it make you a less successful entrepreneur, no way!!

Sure there are tears, perhaps even shouting and fist shaking at the sky, and when you are done with your cleansing primal scream….doesn't it feel better?

Of course it does, but now are you a wreck for the rest of the day? Did it sneak up on you, and your outburst landed on you like ton of bricks?

Maybe you even feel guilty? For what, being human, having emotions?

The answer to those questions is usually yes, but it doesn't have to be that way. My first snippet of advice for you is to acknowledge and give yourself permission to "lose it" once in a while. Yes that's right, it's OK and I expect it to happen, it's NORMAL!

As long as you don't; lash out, harm anyone, spew hateful messages, or kick your pet, my guess is you need to let it out… so do it!

While we are on the subject of giving permission, I also want you to add a teeny rule that must be applied to this. You now have a time limit for this "exorcism of stress build up".

If you feel it coming on, things building up inside… tell yourself, Ok I need to take care of this, and I need to be back in 45 minutes, or whatever time frame you chose. So now you know, you have 45 minutes to unleash those pent up emotions, and when the time is up, your done… LEAVE IT BEHIND… (you can't move forward if you are still "back there" somewhere) And move into the now. Return to the "scene of the crime" with a new perspective and attitude. It really is that simple!

I have taken the liberty to jot down a few helpful ideas on how to release some of that emotional pressure you are carrying.

These are actual stress relieving tactics either myself or my long list of clients have used, and still use today:

- Go out for a brisk walk…do NOT drag your cell phone with you!

- Go out jogging……WARNING: if your not used to this…an emotionally charged "jog" could render you unable to walk, think, breath without being in mind numbing pain. So use control.

- Use a boxing speed bag…yes boxing….. mount it in your office, garage, laundry room. Buy the nifty gloves to protect your hands, and whale away on it!

CAUTION: Get some instruction on how to use it, and take it easy at first, because a real speed bag hits back until you get the hang of it!

Guess how I know?

- Go buy a Kids paintball gun and go target shooting!! Paintball paint is water soluble, you don't need to fill out reams of paperwork to get one, it's safe, it's quiet, and inexpensive to operate.

Do I have to say it? Ok I will…..only shoot at inanimate objects as targets!

Make your target something worthy of making that bull's-eye…like say a picture of your computer, or the words INTERNET, or Day J.O.B.

The point is, you can focus your energy, shoot off a few rounds, make a colourful splat, and if anyone asks…. tell them you are trying out a new interior-decorating technique.

Work on that aim, you don't want a neighborhood full of pink, green, and blue squirrels!

- Hit a bucket of golf balls at a local driving range. It's cheap, it's fast, and you don't need to own any equipment, just show up, even in heels! Can't you just picture the source of your stress painted right there on that little white ball. You tee up… slowly draw your arm back… and WHAM.. Bye Bye stress!!!

* BONUS: you don't have to clean up a thing, or buy the balls.

- Go out and get a cup of coffee… walk there if you can.

- Buy some fresh flowers for yourself, maybe even bring back a scented candle.

- Draw, doodle, scribble, even color with crayons.

When your peaceful and calm, generally feeling good about things, start writing down on separate pieces of paper, some activities you can do to relieve stress.

Put them all in a baggie, or a jar, and keep it somewhere handy.

FIRST acknowledge it's happening and then do something about it!

If you're like most professionals, you've attended lots of seminars and conventions this year. If you're like us, you probably still have a few more to go to. We usually get fired up at these events and commit to make a change when we get back to the office. However, many times we return only to find that there are so many pressing issues that say, "Do me now!" that you feel you need to put your new ideas on hold.

Here at CMP we definitely believe in continuing education. We also believe that you should get value from every event you attend. There should be at least one thing you can use to make your business better than it was before the event. To make sure we get the most out of any event we attend, we've come up with a few seminar preparation tips:

Set a goal for what you want to get out of the event. Do you want to network with a particular company? Do you want to talk with a particular lender or organization? Do you want to learn about a particular niche. Look at your registration information to find out what will be available to you when you arrive.

Jot down questions that you hope to have answered during the event. Many times you'll get answers to these things as the speaker presents their topic. But if it is not, you'll be ready with your questions as soon as the opportunity presents itself.

Consider how you will archive the information you receive for use at a later date. If you expect to receive lots of flyers, rate sheets, and pamphlets, set up a swipe file before you go to the event so that you can organize the information easily when you return. Otherwise, it's likely to sit in a canvas bag until it's time to go in the garbage. If you plan to do a mailing using the business cards you collect, get a card reader or delegate the task with you team so that it can be done promptly. You're more likely to get a response while you're still fresh in someone's mind.

Develop a note taking strategy that allows you to locate important information quickly. A strategy that we were exposed to this year that works great is to section off the right margin to place innovative ideas and immediate action projects. When we scan through our notes we simply look along the right margin for the things we intend to implement. We've tried this and it really works.

Take a break between seminars and courses to give yourself time to use what you've learned. The biggest problem we've seen is that many people attend events back to back and end up with a bad case of information overload. This individual typically will tell you that they've tried everything but nothing works. Could it be because they moved on to something else before giving it time to show results? We now leave 4-6 weeks between our continuing education events to make sure that there is time to implement what we've learned and monitor the results.

Enabling Your Employees To Think Smart - Seven Principles of Creative Problem Solving

When faced with a problem, our instinct is to attempt to solve the problem straightaway. A Smart Thinking strategist is likely to adopt a different approach. They ask: Should I really solve the problem, diverting my energy, resources and time towards it? If the problem is insignificant or if it is a problem that is not worth the effort, why waste the resources in the first place? The most important benefit of this type of thinking is you are able to maximize the use of your resources. According to Nadler and Hibino in their book titled Breakthrough Thinking: The Seven Principles of Creative Problem Solving, they argue that competent people approach a problem by 'questioning the purpose of solving it'. This strategy enhances the effectiveness of managing the problems.

The authors citing research that document the breakthrough solutions to problems list the following seven basic principles for effective problem solving.

Each problem should be seen as unique – Despite the presence of similarities between problems for each encounter, we must learn to recognize that when solving each aspect of the problem we must consider the uniqueness of the situational needs (context). Only then we will be able to develop solutions that will meet the unique situational needs.
Focus on the reasons for solving the problem – This is essential if you would like to minimize the waste of resources – money, materials, manpower, machinery and methods. Only when we are able to focus on the purpose(s) we are in a position to view the larger picture of the situation. Instead of asking what is going on here and what is wrong, learn to ask what are we attempting to achieve out of this situation. This will trigger our mind to seek a large number of desired solutions. To keep going for more and more solutions, we should learn to ask: "What else…?". This will help us to develop as many solutions as possible.
Seek solutions with a long-term perspective – Whenever possible identify the ideal and desired solutions and then work backward, so that you can work on practical short-term solutions that will become part of the long-term solutions. The authors describe this practice as 'The Solution-After-Next Principle'.
View the problem(s) from a systems approach – Once we learn to view each problem as part of something else, we are beginning to adopt a systems approach in managing problem. The realization that each problem we face is part of larger problem enables us to anticipate the problem(s) we may face when implementing the solutions. This will enable us to develop appropriate strategies we are likely to encounter in implementing solutions.
Learn to work with minimal information – Many of us are trained to seek out a full set of information that is complete and comprehensive when managing problems and work related challenges. Having too much of information in hand may prevent us from considering new and innovative solutions. The intuitive element goes missing with too much of information.
Keep the people factor in mind when developing solutions – As far as possible, involve the people in developing solutions. Their participation and involvement are critical for the overall success of the proposed solution. Keep the solutions broad and flexible so that those who will be managing the solution will have some degree of flexibility. A Standard Operating Procedure type of solutions should be avoided.
Incorporate timeline principle – Each purpose developed to manage the problems should be in the right sequence. Only then we can maximize the outcome of the breakthrough solutions.

Enabling employees to think smart should begin with focusing on the purpose for solving the problems. While most of these do adopt some of these principles, sometime in managing some of our problems, for the benefits to be realized we need to learn to use these principles in all our decision making. It is only through a consistent and coordinated approach that we will be able to make the breakthrough thinking as part of our decision making process.

Enabling Our Employees To Think Smart is about encouraging them to adopt the above seven principles in a consistent and coordinated manner. We need to let our employees understand the importance of defining the purposes of working on a problem. The emphasis is to find out what are we trying to accomplish with the problem situation. There could be so many benefit statements for your business, how do you choose?

Marketing is the process of communicating to people about your product or service so they can make a purchase if they perceive they want or need it. If they are not aware of it, don't know how to purchase it or don't perceive it fulfills a want or need, there can be no sale.

The key word in that paragraph is 'perceive'. Your marketing, and therefore your benefit statements, should focus on the perception in the marketplace, not necessarily the actual benefit.

For example, in my business one of the greatest benefits many of my clients realize AFTER working with me is confidence. My clients' confidence in their business abilities sometimes skyrockets. So why don't I market based on this? Confidence is so important in business ownership. When prospects are considering hiring me, they do not perceive that they have a confidence problem! Therefore, if I am marketing to my target market based on increasing their confidence, my marketing will fall flat. It will not connect with my target at all.

Here's another example. A couple is having love life issues in their relationship, and a couples therapist is looking for clients. The actual problem may be that the man is not saying anything remotely romantic, and the woman is too critical. They don't see it that way before they have gone through the therapy, so if the therapist markets herself based on men and women not communicating well, she won't get these clients.

If, on the other hand, the therapist markets herself based on improving couples' love lives, that will make an emotional connection and pique interest because that's the perceived benefit they need. The actual benefit they receive is improved communication, but using that benefit in her marketing will not entice her target market to call.

Finding the right staff is critical, as we discussed in the article "Finding Staff to Complement Your Business". But what about keeping good staff? Is it important? Is it worth the effort to keep the right folks on the job? Let's look at the four areas that staff turnover affects – in a business of any type. Those areas are: Productivity, Revenue, Customer Satisfaction, and Long Term Viability.

EFFECTS ON PRODUCTIVITY

This is rather obvious, but think about the work that's being left undone. If a staff member has to cover the phones because the receptionist has quit, she is going to omit work somewhere. In the choice between her regular work or answering the phone she'll do the one she feels is more important. But in her consideration she has to think of the effect of unfinished work on other folks in the business, and she will likely make her choice based on the amount of flak she thinks she'll get from others. If she's conscientious, her sense of duty will play into it; but one of those jobs will not be done well, and staff and customers know it's not being done well.

Staff who work hard – those with a sense of duty and industry, tend to be much more negatively affected by the increased work generated by high staff turnover. These staff like to get things done completely and well, and that's almost impossible when a vacant position's work also has to be covered. Consequently, and this is a killer, it's the best staff who tend to be most depressed or angry about vacancies, and are more likely to walk if the situation remains unresolved.

Whether it's because they're physically missing or that they can't do as much when they're filling in for others, missing staff mean you're just not going to get the same sales volume. With staff vacancies, neither remaining staff nor the boss can work as fast. Vacancies result in technical work being delayed, information not being collected, customer calls being delayed or missed altogether, and sales not being supported. All of these will result lower revenues now, and probably in the future.

EFFECTS ON CUSTOMER SATISFACTION

Modern customers are extremely aware of service and product quality. As the new millennium unfolds, offshore competition has made many of its inroads through higher quality products and better services to support them. Because of this, most American companies have had to increase service levels far beyond what they were 60 years ago. While that's not a bad thing, it means that you'd better be keeping up with customer expectations. And guess what? That's difficult to do when you are turning staff over. FIRST, to prevent turnover, have regular meetings with your staff to discuss how to run things better. When you do this kind of meeting, be SURE to follow up and address the ideas that come up. Be honest, if you don't think an idea is workable tell them so, but look for ways to implement as many of the ideas as possible. What Constitutes a Learning Organization

The work that was done in the early 90's and subsequently in the field of corporate practice by Peter Senge and his Associates in the Sloan School of Management at MIT and by Chris Argyris and his Associates at Harvard have flowed from academia in to the world of successful corporate management. Senge's theories and experience in his consulting practice at MIT have become the foundation for the theory and practice of what is now known as the learning organization. Senge's work came to the fore through his ground breaking book "the Fifth Discipline" published by Doubleday in 1990.

In that book Senge, introduced the concept of five new components which he believed were gradually converging to innovate learning organizations. The five technologies which Senge listed are: Systems Thinking; Personal Mastery; Mental Models; Building Shared Vision and Team Learning. If the learning organization were an engineering innovation , it would be termed a "technology" but since the learning organization is an item of human behavior these components need to be seen as disciplines. In Senge's mind that discipline is not an enforced order but a body of theory and technique that must be studied and mastered to be put in to practice.

Senge goes on to say that to practice a discipline you have to be a lifelong learner. You can never say "We are a learning organization" any more than you could say 'I am an enlightened person". Practicing a discipline is different from emulating a "model". When these new management innovations are described as the "best practices" of the so-called leading firms, Senge defers. In his opinion, great organizations are not built by emulating other. In his opinion, as the five component learning disciplines converge they will not create the learning organization but rather a new wave of experimentation and advancement.

The most accurate word in Western culture to describe what happens in a learning organization according to Peter Senge is metanoia. Metanoia is a Greek word meaning "shift of mind". Awakening and transcendence also give the right connotation.
Senge feels that the meaning of learning has lost its central meaning in our current society's contemporary usage. Real learning gets to the heart of what it means to be really human. Through leaning we recreate ourselves and become able to do something we were never able to do. We re perceive the world and our relationship to it. Senge synthesizes these concepts in to the following definition of a learning organization - an organization that is continually expanding its capacity to create its future. In his mind, it is not enough to only learn what is needed to survive. "Survival learning' often known as "Adaptive learning" must be joined by "generative learning" - learning that enhances our capacity to create.

The Fifth Discipline is a comprehensive treatment of the disciplines that Senge believes make up what can truly be called a "learning organization."

Corporate Identity - The Relation Between Culture and the Company's Product

All larger companies and all those who have been in the market for several business cycles are prone to an (identity) crisis. Corporate identity and the product of the company are related. This is quite important when dealing with change.

In his book – "let's make things better," Marcel Metze writes about the Philips culture which is centered around engineers on one side and salesmen on the other; some how these two groups keep the organization in balance.

For those of you how know Philips know that this company "makes things," it operates in consumer electronics, appliances, medical systems or in general in a wide area of products that require a design (which is sales centered) and engineering (which is product centered).

Philips is a company that is more than hundred years old and has survived many crises.
Currently ABN AMRO is struggling with some kind of a crisis. One of the problems the company is dealing with is that it is too large for the Netherlands and too small to be a world player.

There is a big difference however between both companies. One (Philips) is a producer and ABN AMRO a financial institution, a bank. Cultural-wise both companies are of course quite different too. Where a producers' culture is strongly based on a tangible product with which employees can identity themselves easily, a financial company lacks such a tangible product and requires more effort to build a cultural identity. This makes that a financial company should invest more in culture where much of the culture of a production company comes with the "nature" of this product itself.

Companies that are dealing with a shift from a product-oriented culture to a service-oriented culture struggle with this cultural element too.

What do the WINNERS KNOW that the LOSERS DON'T? They know that MLM is just a way of ORGANIZING PEOPLE WHO BUY A PRODUCT. That's all it is. Anyone who tells you anything different is either sadly mistaken or flat out lying to you. If it's REAL NETWORK MARKETING, everyone makes what they're worth, and gets what they pay for.

DO YOU PLAY GOLF? I don't (either), but I know there's a place where the course is that's called the "club". If you want to play, you have to be a MEMBER. Oh sure, they might let you play once or twice, but eventually you have to JOIN THE CLUB if you want to play… right?

When it comes to budget planning you need a solid plan that will map out what it is you need to be doing with your money. If you don't have a budget then you are out spending money and really aren't making sure you have enough to pay your bills or even that you have enough set aside for emergencies or retirement. So, it is important to have budget planning software that will help you create your budget and follow it each month. That way you will spend only what needs to be spent and save whatever amount it is you want to save. Budgeting software is excellent because it does all the work for you!

The first and most important aspect of budget planning is determining how much money you make each month and how much you must spend. The "must" refers to necessities like food, gas, car payments, house payments, and those general living expenses that are necessary. Work out your budget based on these numbers. Once you know how much you make and how much you have to spend to survive then you just look at the difference to see how much money you have left over to save, play with, invest, or donate. When you know what is left of your income after bills each month then you will have a good idea whether you are living above your means or not.

Now, if the number that was left over from your income after bills seemed like a lot more money than you have at the end of the month you need to figure out where it is going. Sit down and think. Are you buying a fast food lunch every day? That would account for at least $100 a month for one person. Do you buy drinks at the gas station or magazines at the grocery store? Find all the little places you are spending your money and you will see very quickly that there are better ways to save and still get what you want. If you like to have a cold drink in the car then take one from home. If you like reading magazines then subscribe. You will pay for a year's subscription about the same price of three or four newsstand prices at the grocery store. Doing little exercises like this will allow you to see where you waste money and how you can rein it in.

What's in a Face?

I once had a colleague that would roll his eyes at almost every idea that wasn't his own. Additional facial expressions that complemented the eye-rolling were typically easy to spot as well: puffed cheeks then a release of air, sighs, furrowed brows, and other assorted expressions that gave everyone around the distinct impression that this individual thought he was way too smart to have to sit in meetings with the rest of us. One time someone called him out on it. The most interesting part of all of this was that he really didn't have a clue that he was an eye-roller. He truly was not aware of the expressions he was making and even more importantly how they were negatively impacting the rest of the team.

I've found two factors that can lead to problems with facial expressions. The first is the person being completely unaware of the face they are donning. Individuals who are not conscious of the picture they've painted on their face for others to see are usually also not fully aware of the impact they have on their group. The second factor that can lead to problems is in misreading the facial expressions in front of us. Concern may be misconstrued as disapproval. A lingering furrowed brow from a prior meeting may be taken as frustration around the topic you are putting on the table.

Have you ever stopped and thought about the face you are wearing?

The expression it holds during a team meeting.

The signal it gives off that says 'don't talk to me right now' as you're walking down the hall.

The 'I'm in trouble' or 'life is great' face after you leave your manager's office.

Unless you have a particularly good poker face and wear it all day long; you probably show a lot about what you're thinking and feeling in your face, like the rest of us. While it's usually not a problem to wear your emotions on your face; it makes sense to understand how people around you will perceive the expression you're wearing. From a scowl to a smile your face paints a picture and the people around you read meaning into the pictures they see. If you manage others it's particularly important to understand the messages you're transmitting through your facial expressions.

Let me share with you another story. This one is about P.J., a mid-level manager of about 30 people. Part of what P.J. was known for was wearing his feelings on his sleeve. The employees used to wait for P.J. to walk by their desks after a management meeting. They were sure they knew what was going on by the look on P.J.'s face. When P.J. looked worried they all assumed something bad was about to come down the pike. They kibitzed and shuffled around for the rest of day and theorized about what was to come. Nothing productive was accomplished the rest of the day. However, when he walked out smiling and, by the expression he wore, obviously happy people were eager to find out what was up. They'd go right up and ask what was going on. The rest of the day the team would be humming away like a well oiled machine. The team remained on this roller coaster ride until P.J. realized the impact he was having on the team. At first he didn't really believe that they paid that much attention to him. But he couldn't let go of the idea so he decided to test the waters. He'd leave meetings purposely very serious. For the rest of the day he kept an eye on the team. It was true. They scuttled around and kibitzed and were completely unproductive. When he left meetings cheery there was a 180 degree shift in the vibe of the office. Back to the well oiled machine. This information didn't stop P.J. from reacting to the business at hand, but it did help him understand when he needed to put a little control on his emotions. It also helped him realize that he needed to communicate with his team and explain the expressions they were seeing. They needed to understand when he was worried or frustrated just as much as when he was excited or happy.

So what do you do? P.J. is a great example of what to do. Pay attention to how you're feeling and how you're expressing yourself in your everyday work situations. Pay attention to the reactions of those around you. Allow your facial expressions to support your managerial ability.
